Ft. McAllister State Historic Park, situated in Richmond Hill, GA along the Ogeechee River, preserves a well-maintained earthen Confederate fort from the Civil War era.

In 1864, on the evening of December 13th, Bryan County experienced the devastating impact of war. Recognizing the strategic importance of Fort McAllister for the Union's campaign against Savannah, General Sherman redirected 4,500 troops south of the city and inflicted widespread destruction on local plantations.

From a vantage point atop a rice mill overlooking the Ogeechee River, Sherman observed the rapid fall of Fort McAllister with minimal casualties reported on both sides. This military action concluded Sherman's infamous March to the Sea, culminating with his entrance into Savannah on Christmas Eve through what was once its fortified rear.
